In what area of Shenzhen to rent an apartment?
Depends on your goals.
If you live with a family-definitely Nanshan, especially Shekou.
There are a lot of foreigners and amazing infrastructure, despite the remoteness from the city center.
If you often travel to Hong Kong – only Lohu.
If you have an office in the center — of course, Futian.
If you are not burdened with work and want to enjoy life, beaches, surfing-Dapeng Peninsula!
Other areas are less popular.

Shenzhen does not have city center. On my opinion, there have 6 centers of gravity
1. Lohu. Old district, where the first scyscrappers builded. There the busy cross-border with HongKong
2. Futian. Real city center with a lot of new hotels and shopping malls.
3. Up from OCT park. There many parks and attractions. Between many spots, probably smart choise.
4. Around Bullet tower office building, there fashion area with MIXC shopping Mall
5. Shekou. The favorite area for expats in Shenzhen. Outstanding living environment, sea view, many restaurants.
6. Qinhai. New area close to airport. new hotels and office buildings.
